The Mayfield Plague
A downloadable game
Death was slow, feeding into the body until nothing was left
Those who showed no sign were suddenly seized with fevers
They coughed and shivered, screaming in the darkness like banshees
It was terrible to watch as they died soon after, succumbing to the pandemic was terrible.
When it spread all over the town, no one stood a chance.
No one. Not Mother or Father or Daughter or Son. Not a dog or cat or rooster or cattle. Nothing.
It was the year 1790 in the large, bustling city of Mayfield when the epidemic struck. First, the sailors who docked their ships carried it into the markets where food was bought. Then, the shop owners shook hands with everyone for a good deal. It was only a matter of time before people learned of the terrible disease.
The Whispering Paranoia, also known as the Grave Eyes.
When the Whispering Paranoia enters Mayfield through the port, no one knows what to make of it until one by one people begin dropping dead. With no idea how it spreads and why it makes its victim grow maniacal and paranoid, the city starts crumbling. The religious cry that it is the end, the rich pack up their bags and leave and the poor are left with no defence. Doctors are left scrambling to each house only to tell those who are afflicted they are doomed.
Twenty-one Magdalena Yates is a polished young woman who plans on becoming a teacher in New York. Unfortunately, as the epidemic strikes Poxfield, she is forced to stay inside with her family and take care of Nonie. Her life soon becomes a living nightmare as the disease steals those she cherishes and transforms them into screaming banshees in their beds. But Magdalena doesn’t have much time to mourn, because she is the only one who can take care of her little sister. With the death count rising and no cure in sight, Magdalena’s struggle to teach the masses is soon shattered by her mission to stay alive.

Magdalena Yates
Magdalena Yates is an outspoken, polished young lady who after her mother's teachings always remains upright and perfect to those around her. She aims to please everyone and ends up being very popular in the city of Poxfield. Struggling with her parent's expectations for her to stay home and take care of Nonie. She is also strongly encouraged to marry the next door's handsome son just because their parents know each other. Despite her polished attitude, she occasionally acts unfeminine by speaking her mind and soiling her outfit if its called for. In the end, she has two personalities that clash constantly. The epidemic brings out the unladylike side of her, especially when Nonie comes first.
Nonie Yates
Nonie Yates is an outspoken tomboy with a passion to be whoever she wants to be at the very moment. She refuses to marry anyone and runs around drawing attention and dirty looks. Because of this, she is rarely allowed to leave the house besides attending church. She often is the gossip of everyone in Poxfield who constantly compares her to Magdalena. But Magdalena always makes sure to protect Nonie and be a good older sister. They have a strong sisterly bond that can’t be broken, even by disease.
Selah Yates
Selah Yates is the mother who has had a stern tongue ever since her father, Magdalena's grandfather, died in a tragic accident. She criticises Magdalena constantly and always makes sure she is working. To Nonie, she is even harsher, though this is because she is clouded by grief. Despite all of this, she cares deeply for them and will always do so. There are some moments of clarity where Selah will let Magdalena off the hook.
Wiley Walters
Wiley Walters is the next-door family's handsome son who has a crush on Magdalena. He is sort of intimidated by her strong exterior but loves her dearly from a distance. Magdalena is unsure how Wiley feels about her, and is confused often by his constant flustered expression when she’s around. He’s playful and a good friend to Nonie.
Minerva Mayfield
Minerva Mayfield is a freed slave who is Magdalena's best friend. She helps those who are sick and has a caring, motherly attitude towards Magdalena and especially Nonie. Despite it all, she keeps her confidence up and is always there to cheer you up.

It took me time to get to this entry (Spooktober is long done, lol) but I finally got to it on my list, and oh boy. Sincerely, I already had the impression I was going to find myself in a story much more serious than with other entries, and I fully support that. Horror is a genre brimming with cheap gimmicks and it's always welcomed when it's played as an honest interpellation.
Not to mention, the theme is absolutely on point. It's pretty obvious with the covid pandemic, a story like this would hit differently. More over, the more I think about it, the more I realize just how intelligent this choice of story is. You really got me thinking. You kind of reminded me of how much just went on - is still going on, in a way. The people who have gone through that didn't really have it "go away", as today's commonfolk would have themselves think.
Hell, even if I think I was more conscious than the standard when it came to the pandemic, I think it just dawned on me, just how cruel is that we are denying their experience when it hasn't even been three years - when the virus is still taking people. I mean, I have to give you people prompts at the game's content. You really brought up and offered a needed reflection, and that's the best experience you can give a player, and that's the highest praise I can think of.
I went on a tangent there and couldn't even address everything else the game has to offer, lol. I wanted to make mention specially of the music, backgrounds and sprites. It's such a strong combination of powerful feelings in sound (and I mean holysh--), expressive characters (would have liked a few differences in poses, but ultimatedly they really work) and an ambience that feel emersive and it's honestly striking in its detail (seriously, those backgrounds... the market has to be my favorite, btw.)
I could add to this the voice acting (howdy, Rachel, Meg!) making some of the scenes feel honest and painfully endeering. Having watched the death scene twice, I can tell hearing her final breaths is one of the most powerful moments of the game, which was only enhanced by an even more powerful soundtrack.
All working in service of a story that is heart wrenchingly beautiful and it's horror in so much as it reminds people of their own vulnerability. Just amazing. Good work, all of you.
A few things I think you should know - SPOILERS AHEAD:
First. Right about the time the mother is bedridden, there seems to be a mix up of scenes. It's not only the fact that the death + funeral plays twice, but also it feels like the sequence is incorrect. For example:
-I can tell from context Minerva's visit should come in between the funeral and the onset of Nonie's illness, giving them no time so they could flee to New York.
-The part about not having enough food should come after.
-The doctor shows up after the description of Magda having been taking care of her mother for days, but the scene plays out as if it's the same morning the mother fainted.
-At some point it mentions "Wiley's letter" but there was no mention of that before XD
...etc
On the same note, there are some issues with the writing. Nothing big, and nothing that can't be easily corrected by skimming through the text and polishing things. I strongly recommend adding comas lol. Other than punctuation, there are a few lines that did confuse me (sadly I can't remember where exactly, but it was around the part of the mother falling ill, or at least before Nonie falls too).
Btw, I'm gonna guess the writer (like me) isn't an English speaker. I used three beta readers for my text in our game, and they caught most if not all of my mistakes. So, I recommend that approach always.
Long story short, I think you need to go over the text and do some fixes to the writing, correct grammar if grammar needs correcting, and move the scenes to their correct order (especially this part) lol.
Also, a small thing but, in the page description where you put the voiceacting cast-- see the part where you mention Tabetha McNeal? You put her name as if she was the character and the character as if it was the actress (link included). Minor thing but I thought you might want to correct that^^
A suggestion, if I may: I'd scrap the "Paranoia Whisper" thing. In the description you mention it's supposed to make the sick paranoid but you don't do much with it. I don't know if it was an idea that was scraped, or if you were thinking of expanding the game with more content to include that, but, also, it's probably not needed (or advised, since it takes away from the reality of it all). Besides, the names comes up way too late in the story, and by that time it makes little sense to add new information. Maybe if it was a comment about how people in denial named it like that because they refused to think the sickness was real... a bit of social commentary, if you will. That I could get behind.
And another small suggestion: the CGs and menu art could be touched up a little so they look a bit more like the rest of the art of the story. I'm talking about palette, blurr and thinner lines. Whoever did those (backgrounds and sprites) maybe could try to unify the art style? I think it would improve the appeal greatly.
I'll leave it at that since I already cluttered too much space but, here's to a game well made and with loads of potential in the future too. Plus I'm still listening to the OST. Man it is crazy good...
Oh damn. I forgot to talk about the GUI! It was my main focus and favorite part of the whole game, actually... right until the scene with the death and the chorus start playing. Then the music took the numer one spot. But the GUI still comes out as the strong second. Good ideas all around!
Goodness Rey, what a review. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for playing and spending some time letting the team know how you felt. Take care and again, thank you.
What is the difference between "PC" and "Win" versions. Those two usually mean exactly the same thing.
Good point! Hopefully either or works for you. If you experience any download issues, please open a web browser and download from the web: https://oishii.itch.io/the-mayfield-plague. Kind regards, Lila
I would call this game lovely except that it's not actually lovely at all—in fact, most of the time I was on the verge of tears and/or horrified by what was going on!!! What an absolute experience this was. My heart still feels heavy now just continuing to listen to the main menu music as I'm typing this (I didn't want to turn it off lol dkafjsldkfa)
There's just so much great stuff going on here. First, my absolute favorite—the music! GOD! It really creeps its way into your heart. Like, just creating this deep heavy weight that settles down around your whole psyche while you're playing and gets you immersed in the horrors that are happening. Each track was absolutely beautiful and brought SO much emotion into all the scenes and the growing sadness of the tale. The VA was also a delight! Every character felt very on point, and the lines were delivered with a lot of emotion, particularly during some of the grim scenes.
The BGs were gorgeous! Really lush and warm, transporting you instantly into each scene. And the sprites looked superb on top of them! I really loved all the directing and animation you used with the sprites. It really brought everything to life and added a lot of impact to the scenes, making everything feel very cinematic!!
The story and writing were wonderful. There was this lovely creeping dread that just kept growing and growing throughout the whole thing. But I really enjoyed the characters and their interactions in spite of the horrors. For instance, when Magda and Nonie were pretending everything was on a ship while trying to take care of their mother—that was so heartbreaking!! It made it feel very real and visceral, watching them try to stay positive and push through things even while they knew what was happening. Magda and Nonie's relationship in general was quite cute and well done. GUHH THE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE DISEASE THOUGH. I admittedly had to pause a few times as it did get quite detailed, which made it feel all the more tense and tangible. I don't want to leave anything too spoilery here, but I will say that I was glad things did finally start to get better for them at the end.
All in all, I really enjoyed this!! It hits your gut in all the right spots and is a grim, somber tale that will really stick with you even after you're done playing. You all did a fantastic job putting this together! 💕
CARROT YOU ARE TOO SWEET THANK YOU SO MUCH IM EXCITED FOR YOUR GAME TO PLAY AS WELL!!
